Marina | Battle for Marina - 1657 | Dalmatia | Croatia
Marina is a tourist resort and a small port near the old one the central Dalmatian town of Trogir. Crystal clear sea, sandy beaches, undiscovered, and preserved nature will delight you.
The Marina Tourist Board organized a staging of the historic battle for Marina in which the Marines and Ottomans took part.
This battle is of great historical importance and is specific in that they are the main role was played by brave marine women. The depiction of the battle is not just reconstruction of the struggle, is already an event of an educational-historical character through storytelling concept.
The event is held every year at the end of June in authentic the historical ambiance of the medieval settlement of Marina where the real event and happened.
Legend has it that this happened during the longest and most difficult Turkish - of the Venetian conflict called the Candian War (1645-1669), when Marina at the end of July 1657, she experienced the most difficult days in her history.
The attack on the village began in late June, and the locals and Captain Jakov Jerkovic they do not agree to surrender and defend themselves with all available weapons, rifles, and cannons. Unexpectedly strong defense of the war veterans that caught a larger Turkish army forced the pasha to destroy the place for several days large cannons.
The greatest interest is related to the defense of Marina from the Turks in 1657 is tied to 30 armed young women dressed in men's uniforms who are actively participated in the struggle. We know some of the names of these heroines and their deeds. Kata Despotova and Matuša Škriljina, fought dressed in men's clothing and when the Turks captured them, finding them astonished that they were women, they did not kill them but took them away. A third brave woman, a girl named Jele.
Not wanting to surrender, Marunova set fire to several barrels of gunpowder in the tower which housed sheltered women and children, killing a large number of Turks.
Marina celebrates the brave women of its history!
